I am using 1and1 as my host, trying to setup
bbPress Notify (No-Spam) – Reply by Email Settings
I use test connection and it say
Testing POP3/IMAP Credentials… Failed Failed to connect to IMAP/POP3.
I am copying and pasting the login information I use for logging into gmail.

It sounds like you’ll have to turn on Less Secure Apps in Gmail, and maybe create an application password for it. Those two items usually do the trick.

I had to turn on the Less Secure Apps and then was able to verify the Gmail account. For future help for other people turn on Less Secure Apps in Gmail,
What are the directions after you have it synced? I dont see any next steps such as if you have to add template tags. etc.
Once you’ve configured the email lookup method (wp-cron or webhook and IFTTT), there are no other steps other than to go ahead and reply directly via email :).
If you need to change templates, do so via bbpnns (Settings > Forums > Email Notifications).
