We have the digest option turned off (but the default of “daily” is set) for 99% of our users (our site is just about to go live), and we have the new topic and replies set to only go out to Administrators. But we turned on the “Notify all members of all groups that have access to that forum” option yesterday and it looks like a notifications digest email went out to all the users of that group last night.
I’m confused how this is possible with the “enable digests” option off for the useres and the topic and recipient roles both set to only administrators. Does the notify all members checkbox override or ignore the other settings?

Hi Pam,
Are you sure that it was a digest that went out and not a regular topic/reply notification?

Thanks for the quick reply. And you’re right, we think — it looks like regular notifications.
But, those notifications didn’t go out the previous day when we had all the exact same settings (and had new entries in several forums) — except for turning on the “Notify all members of all groups that have access to that forum” option.
So, the role selections have no effect on the “Notify all members of all groups that have access to that forum”? And that option (notify all…) is only for instant notifications and doesn’t affect the digests?
Is there a log we can dig into to find out who got what notifications?
Thanks!

Hi Pam,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
But, those notifications didn’t go out the previous day when we had all the exact same settings (and had new entries in several forums) — except for turning on the “Notify all members of all groups that have access to that forum” option.
That option is considered a new, independent, rule, in addition to the overrides and the roles.
And that option (notify all…) is only for instant notifications and doesn’t affect the digests?
Every instant notification affects the Digests. Without them, there’s nothing for the digests to enqueue for, well, digesting :).
Is there a log we can dig into to find out who got what notifications?
There’s a couple of handy plugins that log mailouts. This one is pretty good:
